How Bronchitis Made Me More Sun Conscious…

In 2010, I went into anaphylactic shock.

It was because I took a dose of Doxycycline.

Doxy is antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections:

The prescription was to treat a bout of Bronchitis that left me bedridden — ain’t nobody got time for that.

The cause of the Bronchitis was a weak immune system cause by a severe Vitamin D deficiency.

Bloody keyboard worker who go no sun exposure!

Tangent: I was also prescribed Doxycycline as an anti-malarial the previous year for travelling down the Mekong in Laos.

2 Days before, in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I decided not to take it.

Thankfully — imagine what could have happened in Pakbeng in the Jungle in the middle of nowhere!

I have also had another close call with it, without knowing that is very much beyond what I am willing to share here!

Anyway…

Ever since then (2010), I have supplemented Vitamin D with natural sunlight.

The problem with the Australian sun is it causes cancer.

Which I am very mindful of (my father was very recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.)

Fuck cancer.

So, I get a skin check each year for melanoma and I am careful to get exposure for short amounts of time when the UV index is low.

Each day I check the UV index…

You know the drill:

1. Putting down what I am doing;

2. Grabbing an internet connected device;

3. Pulling up Google;

4. Searching for Adelaide’s UV Index;

5. Clicking first result; and

6. Navigating to find the days index.

Boring!

So I built quick call/response on any Google Voice active device — simply say: “Okay Google, talk to Adelaide Ultraviolet Index,” and this Action will tell you todays sun protection recommendation times, numerical ultraviolet index and descriptor of sun risk.

No more sunburn!
