It has been widely reported that ChatGPT hit 100,000,000 monthly users in January 2023.

Apparently that made it the fastest growing web app in history.

But there hasn’t been much credible data on its user base 6 months on.

According to Silicon Valley Business Journal (https://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2023/05/31/180-million-people-use-chat-gpt-but-few-americans.html), the user base it’s up to 180,000,000 monthly users.

Add on top Bard (30,000,000 monthly users — https://www.mlyearning.org/google-bard-statistics-facts/), Bing Chat (100,000,000 monthly users — https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/9/23631912/microsoft-bing-100-million-daily-active-users-milestone) and all the other minor generative AI tools that have emerged, surely generative AI is pushing 350,000,000 monthly users.

There are 4.5B internet users.

If there are 350,000,000 generative AI users, then 350M/4.5B = 7.77% of internet users have used generative AI.

According to the technology adoption cycle, a technology reaches the (early) majority at 13.5% (which is 607,500,000 internet users)

It’s certainly out of the innovators (the first 2.5%), but it’s still with the early adopters.

It’s still really early!
