My sister Naomi is basically the human version of Captain Planet…

And because of her, I haven’t taken out my blue lid bin (rubbish) at all this year.

That is because it gets divided into the others…

My yellow lid bin (recycling) goes out FULL each fortnight.

My green lid bin (organics) goes out rarely — mostly because I have a compost bin.

My soft plastics go back to the supermarket with me each week for recycling.

My beer and wine bottles get recycled for money — not because I need it, but it’s the responsible thing to do.

Plus, it’s also good for parking money when I need to grab a street park in the city.

I have 5 separate collection containers in my house too for all kinds of stuff.

I think I recycle well, yet, I call her very often to ask what I should do with items that are not so obvious, like pencils or carpet!

She diligently educates me on what I need to do.

She then directs me to my council’s website.

Here lies the problem.

I am a pretty motivated and proactive person, but calling my sister is easier than:

  1. Putting down what I am doing;
  2. Grabbing an internet connected device;
  3. Pulling up google;
  4. Searching for my councils website;
  5. Navigating (frustratingly) to find the recycling page; and
  6. Trying to find what I should do with a pencil on said page.

So, I don’t do it.

I just keep calling my sister.

Instead of annoying her, I decided to build a Google Voice Action to replace her.

All I now do is say:

“Hey Google, get me What Bin?”

And the lovely Google voice replies:

“What item would you like to dispose of”;

And I say:

“Pencil”

And she says:

“This item should be placed in the green lid bin.”

It takes many minutes less that calling Captain Planet or finding a website!

I thought about calling is Naomi Captain Planet, but no one else would get the joke.

That is because it’s now live for any Australian to use for FREE: https://rebrand.ly/19530

It has hundreds-and-hundreds of searchable, common household disposable items with more being added each day.

You can now feel good about disposing of items responsibly, avoiding contamination meaning councils could pass on rate savings or spend rates other essential services.

P.S. If you like it, please leave a review and rating (5 stars only). If you don’t like it, please don’t be a jerk and give it a bad review and rating — send me a message here first and I’ll fix the issue!

P.S. If you want a Google Voice Action for anything, send me a message and we can see if it is possible to build for you.
