The Counter-Intuitive Way To Accessing Other People’s Traffic…
My inboxes are full of messages from people asking me to do stuff for them.
99% of the time asking for free.
Not only is the request asking for it to be done for free, but it doesn’t even align with anything that I value or find important.
Literally it would be a waste of my time to do it.
It is a rookie mistake.
When you want someone to do something for you, there are many things that work….
Doing the above does not.
Here is another way:
Create the feeling of reciprocity in me.
Reciprocity is the situation where people like myself are far more inclined to return a favour if they received something for free before a request, than if no favour was given to at all.
Dr Robert Cialdini has given the psychology behind reciprocity justice in his 1983 book Influence.
But the contradiction of reciprocity is you cannot give a favour and expect a favour in return.
That is transactional.
Favours aren’t paid, thus they aren’t transactions.
The expectation undoes the power of reciprocity.
Reciprocity needs to be obligation free.
You do a bunch of favours with no expectation that they will be returned zero-sum, and in doing so, some will be returned because you didn’t expect it.
Now, the book 5 Love Languages (as corny as it is), gives some great categories that cover a lot of the population for what favours you could start offering for free:
· Gifts;
· Time;
· Words;
· Service;
· And so on…
So, if you want something from a category of person (notice I didn’t say someone this time), offer value upfront for free with no expectation it will be returned from them.
That creates the feeling of feeling of reciprocity in them.
Not all people will return it, but if you do this enough times, a percentage will and you will get what you want far easier and quicker than asking someone to do something for you.
This is how you go about approaching gatekeepers who control access to the attention, awareness and traffic of a marketing channel.
But to get to this point, you need to first:
1. Know who your dream customers are; and
2. Know where they are and who is the gatekeeper to them.
If you are reading this, I assume you know STEP #1, who your dream customers are.
Now, STEP #2, knowing where your dream customers are and who is the gatekeeper to accessing them, until now, has been a matter of time-consuming market research.
