Why OpenAI Is Empowering Developers To Create Powerful Applications…

Let’s face it, very few AI apps have developed their own Large Language Model (LLM) due to cost, time and expertise — 99% are using an existing LLM like Watson, GPT etc and layering their functionality on top.

This will probably ally many developer’s fears: https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-sam-altman-software-developers-ai-build-consumer-products-chatgpt-2023-6?amp

OpenAI is not planning on competing with developers beyond providing their API, Dall-e, and ChatGPT (including Plugins).

It’s a good strategy.

OpenAI needs to focus on core business…

1) It’s reported that open-source Large Language Models will outperform the ones from OpenAI, Google etc (https://www.semianalysis.com/p/google-we-have-no-moat-and-neither, https://pub.towardsai.net/meet-gorilla-uc-berkeley-and-microsofts-api-augmented-llm-outperforms-gpt-4-chat-gpt-and-claude-d764d16bc25b etc).

And

2) The APIs will never give as much functionality as the core products — ChatGPT is far superior to the chat completions model they provide developers so it will be tough for a developer to create a better ChatGPT on top of OpenAIs API.
